Convert PDF Pages to JPG or PNG: Formats, Limits and Output Checks
Last updated
Render PDF pages as images, choose JPG or PNG, and check the extracted files before sharing them.
Why trust this guide
- Written by JW Tool Box around the actual workflow or linked tool on this page.
- Updated when browser behavior, file handling, or platform dimensions change in ways that affect the steps.
- Focused on practical settings, safe defaults, and real tradeoffs instead of generic filler.
Use PDF to Image to render each PDF page as a JPG or PNG and download the images in a ZIP. The current input limit is 40 MB (40 × 1,024 × 1,024 bytes) for one PDF. Processing time depends on page complexity and available memory.
Export the pages
- Keep the original PDF and select it in the tool. Check that the selected file is the intended document.
- Choose PNG or JPG. The JPEG quality control affects JPG encoding, not PNG.
- Convert and download the ZIP. The tool processes all pages sequentially; a large scanned document can take time or exceed available browser memory.
- Extract the ZIP and compare the image count with the number of source pages.
- Open the first, last and any important intermediate pages. Check order, orientation, dimensions and small text before sharing them.
JPG or PNG?
| Output | Useful starting point | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| PNG | Text, line art and screenshots | File size can be large even though encoding is lossless |
| JPG | Photographic pages or a JPG-only upload form | Compression can soften text and introduce artifacts |
PNG preserves the rendered pixels, not the PDF's original vectors or editable text. Neither format retains searchable PDF text, forms, links or digital signatures as interactive PDF features.
Can I choose pages or DPI?
This tool renders every page at a fixed 2× scale. It does not offer a page-range selector or a configurable DPI setting. Page dimensions in the PDF determine the resulting pixel dimensions.
If you only need pages 2–4, use PDF Splitter first, check that the exported PDF has three pages, then convert that smaller document. To change pixel dimensions after conversion, use Image Resizer.
Why is an exported image too large?
A detailed page can remain large after conversion. If the destination accepts JPG, try a lower JPEG quality from the original PDF, then check the actual bytes and readability. You can also use Image Compressor on an extracted image.
A smaller file is not automatically suitable for a submission form. Check its minimum dimensions, accepted format and whether small text remains readable. Do not upload the ZIP when the form expects a single JPG.
What if conversion fails?
- Confirm the input is a PDF within the 40 MB limit. Changing a filename extension does not convert its format.
- Open the original in a trusted PDF viewer to check for damage or password requirements.
- Try a smaller extracted PDF if the tab runs out of memory. Stay below the separate splitter's input limit when preparing it.
- Keep the original and report the error description rather than sharing private documents.
PDF contents are rendered locally in the browser using PDF.js. Website analytics and advertising are separate activity described in the Privacy Policy.
