What the counter measures

Result How it is counted
Words Whitespace-separated tokens, plus individual Chinese, Japanese and Korean script characters
Characters Visible text characters, including spaces and line breaks; combined emoji count as one when the browser supports grapheme segmentation
Characters without spaces The same character count after removing spaces, tabs and line breaks
Paragraphs Non-empty blocks separated by a blank line
Sentences Non-empty sections separated by ., !, ?, 。, ! or ?
Reading time Word count divided by 200, rounded up to whole minutes; an empty input shows zero

These are practical counting rules, not a grammar analysis. For a school assignment or upload form, the receiving system's rules take priority.

Word count examples you can check

Paste each example into the counter. Character counts below use a browser with Intl.Segmenter, which groups combined emoji and combining marks into visible characters.

Text Words Characters Characters without spaces
Hello world 2 11 10
well-known writer 2 17 16
2026 goals 2 10 9
你好 world 3 8 7
Hello 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 2 7 6

The last example has two whitespace-separated tokens. The emoji is one of those tokens; the result does not mean it is a linguistic word. In an older browser without grapheme segmentation, complex emoji may contribute more than one character.

Do hyphenated words count as one word?

Here, well-known counts as one token because there is no whitespace inside it. well known counts as two. A word processor or submission portal may apply a different rule, so compare the final draft in the system that will assess it.

Do numbers count as words?

Yes. 2026 and 1,500 each count as one whitespace-separated token. A standalone symbol or emoji can also count as a token. This counter does not remove numbers or punctuation before counting Latin-script tokens.

How are Chinese, Japanese and Korean counted?

Characters in Han, Hiragana, Katakana and Hangul scripts count individually in the word total. For example, 你好 world contributes two Chinese characters and one Latin word. This is not dictionary-based word segmentation. Use the character result when your requirement is a character limit.

Check an essay against its word limit

  1. Paste the text that your assignment asks you to count.
  2. Read the Words result and edit your draft as needed.
  3. Check the assignment instructions for titles, citations, footnotes and references.
  4. Confirm the final count in the submission portal or required word processor.

The counter includes everything you paste. It does not automatically exclude citations or a bibliography. For typical assignment lengths, see the college essay word count guide. Those examples do not replace your instructor's instructions.

Count characters for an upload or text field

Use Characters when spaces are part of the limit, or Characters without spaces when they are excluded. A single line break contributes to the character total. Blank lines also separate paragraphs; one line break alone does not start a new paragraph in this counter.

Some services measure bytes, UTF-16 units or a platform-specific character total instead of visible characters. Emoji and accented text can therefore produce a different result. Check the receiving field before submitting a draft near its limit.

Why might the result differ from Word or Google Docs?

Different counters can handle hyphens, symbols, mixed scripts and punctuation differently. This counter treats a standalone & as a token, counts CJK script characters individually, and uses a simple punctuation rule for sentences. An abbreviation such as Dr. can create an extra sentence boundary.

It also counts pasted HTML tags and code as text. Paste the rendered plain text when you want the count of an article rather than its markup.

How accurate is the reading time?

Reading time is an estimate at 200 words per minute, rounded up. A 201-word draft shows two minutes. Technical material, unfamiliar vocabulary and different languages can take longer or shorter. It is not a measured reading speed or a spoken presentation timer.

For broader length examples, see word counts for essays, blogs and books. Use the counter on your actual draft rather than treating a suggested length as a requirement.
