How this page is maintained
- Steps and copy are checked against the current tool behavior.
- Browser limits, file-size constraints, or compatibility gaps are documented when relevant.
- Unless a page explicitly says otherwise, files and text stay in the browser during processing.
How to Count Words and Characters in Your Text
Paste or type your text into the box and the counter updates as you write. It reports words, characters with and without spaces, paragraphs, sentences, and an estimated reading time.
Counting is stricter than splitting on spaces. An emoji or an accented letter counts as one character even when it is stored as several code points, and CJK text is counted per character, so a Chinese paragraph is not reported as one long word.
Worked Example
Paste this sentence:
The final draft is due on Friday and needs one more careful read.
The counter reports 13 words, 65 characters, 53 characters without spaces, 1 paragraph, 1 sentence, and 1 minute of reading time.
What People Use It For
- College and scholarship essays. The Common App personal essay allows 250 to 650 words, and supplemental prompts are usually shorter.
- SEO titles and meta descriptions, which are truncated by pixel width in search results.
- Blog and newsletter posts, where you may want a reading-time label such as 5 min read instead of an exact count.
- Any hard limit, such as a 500-word abstract or a 300-character bio.
Reading time is computed at 200 words per minute, so a 1,000-word article shows as 5 minutes.
Nothing is uploaded. The counts are calculated in your browser, so draft text, client copy, and unpublished work stay on your device.
For more depth, see how to check word count online and typical word counts for blogs, books, and essays. If you are drafting an application, read the college essay word count guide.
How to Estimate Reading Time for a 2,000-Word Essay
The reading time on this page is not a guess and there is no settings panel for it. The counter divides the word total by 200 and rounds up to the next whole minute, so any partial minute is reported as a full one. A 2,000-word essay shows 10 minutes. Add a single word and it reports 11, because 2,001 divided by 200 leaves a remainder and the result is rounded up. The same rule gives 650 words a reading time of 4 minutes, and a 200-word abstract exactly 1 minute.
That rounding is the detail most people miss. If you are quoting a reading time to a reader, round up from the raw count and say so. If you are checking a hard limit, ignore it completely and read the word count itself, since a ceiling can only ever move the number in one direction.
Words, Characters, and the Difference Between the Two Numbers
The two character boxes are not interchangeable. One counts every character in the text; the other removes all whitespace first and counts what remains. The gap between them is the amount of spacing in your draft, which is roughly one character per word in ordinary English prose.
The counter also handles a few cases the way a word processor does not. Every Chinese, Japanese, or Korean character is counted as one word, so a block of CJK text reports the same number of words as it has characters rather than appearing as one long word with no spaces. Emoji and accented letters are counted as single characters even when they are stored as several code points, so a pasted social post does not report a character total that is higher than what you can see. Note that the word count is strict: two spaces between words still count as one separator, so tidying up double spaces does not change the total.
What the Counter Does Not Do
It does not read your headings, captions, or image alt text. It counts the characters in the box and nothing else, so if a submission limit covers a title page as well as the body, paste both together and read the combined total. It also does not wrap around: the count is recalculated on every keystroke, and nothing is saved once you close the tab.
For a longer example, a 1,700-word article shows 9 minutes, where a 230-word-per-minute pace would have shown 8. The difference is the whole reason this page states its rate instead of implying one. Guidance on hitting a target range lives in how to check word count online, and target lengths for different formats are in typical word counts for blogs, books, and essays. For application prompts with their own limits, see the college essay word count guide.
